Fishing in the Sabe River
Kruger National Park
South Africa
IUCN: Listed on IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as 'Least Threatened'
Image Story: Mid morning and I have the luxury of the company of
Stu Porter (Wild4Photographicsafaris) as our vehicle meanders down towards the Sabe River.
Stu has been my early mentor and guide and one of the things he showed me early in our relationship was the importance of shooting on Manual and being able to justify each of my settings. THAT has stayed with me from then on in 2009. Thank you Stu!
With 2 of us in this fantastic vehicle modified superbly for photographic requirements, Stu suddenly stops the vehicle, watching closely in the direction of the fjord.
Two Pied Kingfishers perching on a branch by the track take turns to take off, hover over the shallow pools below the fjord, before diving into the water.
This undisturbed routine provide us ample time and opportunity to capture images of these wonderful birds in flight as they work hard for their next meal.
C1 preset: 1/2500; f8; iso auto 200; Kelvin 5200.
ISO is on auto as a preset only, so that when an opportunity presents on short notice, I can easily switch to appropriate settings for birds in flight confident of getting a pretty good exposure.
These birds are classified as Least Threatened. In certain areas like this, they are thriving.
