Study - Australian Emperor Dragonfly (Anax Papuensis)

By water in Duffys Forest, Sydney
Australia

IUCN: Listed on IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as 'Least Concern'

Image Story:

These are notoriously difficult to photograph - both human and technical limitations come into play. Even the most sophisticated AI tracking (as at 2018) has trouble latching onto a dragonfly in flight and even then, it is momentary.

They are very fast and erratic and small....but on observation, they tend to settle in to flight patterns in favourite areas over water, often hovering for a second or two in similar areas and landing in same locations.

There lies the chance - on Manual Focus, with an abundance of patience, practice, expectation of a low success rate and sometimes just needing to get into the water to get down to the right level (as I did here).

This species is thriving.
